I have to admit I really like the sound of being the Captain and Commander. I can imagine shouting orders to my crew of one (not including the ship’s mascot; a black and white cat named Beans) to “batten down the hatches!” and doing something or other off the starboard bow. The ship would be named the GBM, and she’d sail to far off lands and have high seas adventure!
Anyway, that’s what I’m picturing as I practice David Allen’s Making It All Work. He describes the Self-management Matrix which looks something like this:
The bottom left quadrant is “no control/no perspective” which is being the Victim.
The top left quadrant is “no control/high perspective” which is being the Crazymaker.
The bottom right quadrant is “high control/no perspective” which is being the Micromanager.
The top right quadrant is “high control/high perspective” which is being the Captain and Commander (yes! this one’s for me)
I’m not quite the Captain and Commander of my ship just yet. In some areas I feel like I’m getting there, but in other areas I’m still scrubbing the decks (that’s the last of the nautical jokes…maybe).
In any case, there’s a lot of adventure up ahead and I’m looking forward to a new week.
Thanks for coming along for the ride!
