I can tell when a pernicious condition known as Trying-too-hard-itis creeps up on me. It can happen at any time, and it can be subtle. Sometimes it shows up with its buddy,Perfection-ism.
The sneaky thing about these two is that they make you think you have to attend to them, but they’re insatiable. You just get caught in an endless loop of self-criticism and self-doubt.
Much of my self-improvement journey has been discovering this tendency within myself, and learning how to relate to it. You can’t try too hard to get rid of Trying-too-hard-itis, because ironically, it just adds fuel to the fire. The key is to accept and allow it to exist, and gently choose a more preferable way of thinking, over and over again.
